120 workers demonstrated at Bandırma to protest the Banvit AŞ company that started to lay off workers using the avian flu as an excuse. The Bandırma branch president of Öz Gıda-İş, Food workers’ union, İzzet Kuvanlıklı said, “Faced with the crises in the sector, the corporations are taking a series of measures with encouragement from the government.
“Laying Off workers should be the last measure for plants that know their public responsibilities. However, at Banvit AŞ, where we are organized under Öz Gıda-İş union, the company, disregarding all labor laws sent the workers home without pay and caused harm to them.
“Banvit AŞ, having shown negative attitude towards unionization in the past, has engaged in activities against organizing now, using the avian flu as an excuse, and has started laying off workers starting with our union members. ”
“On the first day of the crises, the corporation started to send workers home without pay. Then came lay offs,” said İzzet Kuvanlıklı, the president of Öz Gıda-İş union. Ha added, “We are calling to all other plants. Stop laying off workers illegally, arbitrarily and unjustly.” The Bandırma branch of Petrol-İş, the Petroleum and Chemical Workers’ Union, Hüseyin Koçyiğit said, “To justify laying off workers, the corporations are blaming the crises. We could challenge them only with solidarity and an organized struggle. The best example of this struggle is the recent high court’s cancellation of Tüpraş privatization.”
