Working women held a rally in front of the Conrad Hotel in Istanbul where the summit “Employment of Women” organized by TİSK (Confederation of Employer’s Unions) was being held. They were there to demand their rights.
A large number of businessmen, reporters, managers, bosses, politicians and ministers attended the summit. While the president of TİSK, Tuğrul Kudatgobilik was addressing the participants, he was interrupted by women standing up displaying signs.
Addressing the attendees the women said, “You have no right to talk about women’s rights on behalf of women. You have no right to hold any meeting or reach decisions. Women’s salvation lies in socialism, not here. You can not address any of our concerns. After the 1980 coup which was most destructive to us, you claimed the same. Now you are defending privatization, you are defending violence against women. This indicates what your understanding of what women’s freedom is. You have no right to talk about working women and homemakers.” Then they opened a sign which said, “Women’s Salvation in Socialism”.
The police and special guards attacked the women from HKM (Peoples Cultural Centers) to stop their talking and remove their sign
When TISK’s President Kutadgobilik asked the police to let the women talk, the women had already been detained and taken to the police station.
