The Student Parents’ Association’s İzmir branch demanded a scientific and democratic oriented education to prevail in education rather than business mentality.
ÖVDER (Student Parents’ Association) organized a meeting at the Eğitim-Sen (Union of Educators) building in İzmir to assess the problems facing schools and students in the 2005-2006 school year. The president of ÖVDER`s İzmir branch, Orhan Yüce, showed the business mentality behind the decision to turn the sports facilities in schools into commercial enterprises, to use school grounds for paid parking lots and to charge fees from students to use the school computers.
On the “contracts between parents and schools,” Yüce said, “This contract that has no legal basis, is against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and against the Agreement on the Rights of Children. He also touched upon the new proposed bill on Education and said the new law would be a hurdle against equal opportunity in education.
