Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union Centre (BGWTUC) will observe a dawn to dusk strike on March 2 protesting against the factory owners’ failure to provide safety to workers and demanding removal of Motiur Rahman Nizami’s from his post.
The BGWTUC organised a rally at Muktangan yesterday to protest against the recent “killings” in KTS garments in Chittagong and Phoenix garments in the capital and other garment factories across the country.
BGWTUC leaders demanded Industries Minister Motiur Rahman Nizami’s removal form his post as he failed to take proper steps against the garment factory owners, government officials, and organizations responsible for the accidents.
The fire in KTS garments in Chittagong and the collapse of Phoenix garment’s building in Dhaka left at least 73 workers dead.
Addressing the rally BGWTUC President Idris Ali said, “For the well being of the garment factories throughout the country Industries Minister Motiur Rahman Nizami has to resign.”
He demanded immediate compensations to the victims’ families and implementations of factory and institution laws, labour laws and International Labour Organisation (ILO) conventions in every garment factory of the country.
BGWTUC General Secretary Ruhul Amin, and leaders Sadekur Rahman Shamim and Iqbal Hossain, Communist Party of Bangladesh leader Abdul Zabber and Krishak Samity leader Sazzad Jahir Chandan also spoke at the rally.
