The privatization of Turkish Telecom, still grabbing headlines and the topic of heated discussions has been chosen for the “Deal of the Year in Emerging Markets” by the Acquisition Monthly institution.
Both Haber Sen and Türkiye Haber İş unions active in communications sector have filed to annul the privatization deal claiming it was not done appropriately. Later the Chamber of Electrical Engineers had filed a brief with a higher court demanding the sale of Turkish Telecom to Oger Telecom be cancelled.
The basis of the lawsuit against the sale is the claim that the infrastructure of Turkish Telecom is considered to be “natural and limited resource”, hence is protected by the Constitution to be under the management of the government. The law suit claims that the ownership of the limited resource owned by Turkish Telecom has not been secured for public ownership, against the constitutional mandate. It also states that the views of the higher court had not been considered while deciding to sell the telecommunication system.
