Kocaeli: Workers beaten first, taken to court later

May 13, 2006

Workers held a protest rally against the governments General Health Insurance Plan during the Prime Minister’s visit to Kocaeli on April 15th. The police had attacked and brutally beat up the protesters.

Now the protesters in that rally, including the Teachers’ and Education Workers’ Union president and other unionists have been charged with “resisting police officers and conducting an illegal march.” If convicted, the unionists and protesters may get 1.5 years to 5 years prison time.
