The resistance to the offer of an unacceptable 17% increase in an economy with over 100% inflation by Yemeksepeti workers continues. The workers for the Yemeksepeti couriers in Ankara, Eskisehir, Adana, Mersin, Denizli, Kütahya and Bolu provinces are also preparing to go on strike to underline that they do not submit to the “misery hike”. The workers have labeled the meager 17% pay hike the “misery wage” or the “misery hike.” The country has become unstable after huge foreign currency fluctuations and an unprecedented fall of the Turkish Lira. Now, inflation has taken away everything the workers had to work for. Under these conditions, the offers such as 17-20% pay hikes still leave the workers underwater, working for 80% less than what they received only a few months ago.
The workers gathered in front of Yemeksepeti Headquarters in Istanbul at the organizing of Transport-Is Union and stated that they will continue to resist until their demands are met. Several representatives of democratic mass organizations and political parties also participated in the protests, which continued for the fifth day. The workers, who continued their protests with applause, slogans, and collective folk dances in front of the Headquarters, stated that they will continue to protest until they get their rights.
The demands of the workers are as follows:
• Net salary, bonus and benefits of 5500 TL. (390 US dollars a month)
• No workers or couriers seeking their rights will be fired.
• The line of business will be moved to be a “transportation line of business” immediately instead of individual, independent contracting.
• Union activity will be secured.
